Today, January 14th, is the day when
Roma people in Bulgaria celebrate their New Year, observing Bango Vasil
(The lame Vasil), mostly known as
Vasilitsa. According to the old legend, St. Vasilii saved Roma people who had nearly drownedinto the sea. The
sea had been on the
point ofswallowing
the Roma people, but just
then old Vasilii sent them a flock of
geese. The Roma people
threw themselves on the geese backs and
that was how they were
saved! That`s why,
since that day, the whole
Roma population all over the world observes the 14th of January as the Day of St. Vasilii or Vasilita, mostly
known asthe
Roma New Year!
Traditionally, on this day people kill a rooster and spread its
blood on the kids` foreheads for health. After that the oldest woman in the
house prepares the rooster`s meat for dinner! Roma people usually
celebrate Vasilitsa at home with their closest relatives. A very interesting fact about this custom is that the houses of the people observed The Roma New Year are
locked until the night of the 13th
of January, so luck does not go out of the house. On the day of Vasilitsa, people open their doors and wait for
their guests to come, hoping the first one is good and lucky.
But that was according to the tradition! Now things have changed! The Roma people get together and
make a big Roma New Year`s Party, play kiuchek and have fun. Traditionally they start the evening singing the Roma Anthem Djelem Djelem.
There are between 8 and 10 million Roma
people all over the world. Happy
Bango Vasil to all of you! Happy Roma New Year! Bahtalo Bango Vasilii amare romenge! Bahtalo Nevo Bresh!
