Stream of the TV Show "Doors" on BNT Pirin Channel from November 5, 2008 /bg audio/

On November 4, 2008 the Americans elected their new President Barack Obama, who is the first African-American President in the history of the USA. Is it possible, though, for the Bulgarians to elect for President somebody from a minority group, no matter which one. To say what they thought about the issue, on November 5, 2008, the youth from Ternipe-Simitli Julieta Evtimova, Zlatina Metodieva and Damian Kachulski participated in the TV show "Doors" on the BNT Pirin Channel. Together with the host of the show Agnes Manova they discussed the issue of discrimination, whether there is any discrimination in Bulgaria and how it can affect the life of a little child. You can watch parts of the show (which you can watch every Wednesday at 6:30 pm on the BNT Pirin Channel) from November 5, 2008, on either our web site or the site of the Regional TV Centre Blagoevgrad. A piece of reporting and interviews  about the issue of discrimination with the Principal and pupils of the "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" High School in Simitli, where both Romani and Bulgarian students study together, you can find here. What a big harm can our words cause to a young person understand from the letter written by Laura Grimes, a fourteen year old British girl, before her committing suicite because of ill-treatment at school.

Happy Vasilitsa!
Written by Дамян Качулски

Today, January 14th, is the day when Roma people in Bulgaria celebrate their New Year, observing Bango Vasil (The lame Vasil), mostly known as Vasilitsa. According to the old legend, St. Vasilii saved RomaПример people who had nearly drowned into the sea. The sea had been on the point of swallowing the Roma people, but just then old Vasilii sent them a flock of geese. The Roma people threw themselves on the geese backs and that was how they were saved! That`s why, since that day, the whole Roma population all over the world observes the 14th of January as the Day of St. Vasilii or Vasilita, mostly known as the Roma New Year!

Traditionally, on this day people kill a rooster and spread its blood on the kids` foreheads for health. After that the oldest woman in the house prepares the rooster`s meat for dinner! Roma people usually celebrate Vasilitsa at home with their closest relatives. A very interesting fact about this custom is that the houses of the people observed The Roma New Year are locked until the night of the 13th of January, so luck does not go out of the house. On the day of Vasilitsa, people open their doors and wait for their guests to come, hoping the first one is good and lucky.

But that was according to the tradition! Now things have changed! The Roma people get together and make a big Roma New Year`s Party, play kiuchek and have fun. Traditionally they start the evening singing the Roma Anthem Djelem Djelem.

There are between 8 and 10 million Roma people all over the world. Happy Bango Vasil to all of you! Happy Roma New Year! Bahtalo Bango Vasilii amare romenge! Bahtalo Nevo Bresh!

With thanks to Tyler Wasson!
